Eating (and shopping) local helps keep our community healthy

City Center Market is celebrating all things local in August, along with other co-op grocers nationwide.

To participate, shoppers can stop by City Center Market to take advantage of the many locally grown and produced foods and other items available there—easily identified by a green “Local” tag. Local foods will be sampled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Friday in August, so shoppers can taste before they buy.

Shoppers are also invited to play Eat Local! Bingo! Pick up an Eat Local! Bingo card at the Co-op, complete the activities – such as “Used local eggs today,” “Bought a book at a locally-owned bookshop,” “Canned local produce”—then bring in the card and get a coupon.

City Center Market is also sponsoring an Eat Local Days Movie Night Aug. 17 at the Minnco Community Room in Cambridge. The movie “Fresh” will be shown at 4:30 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. “We Feed the World” will be shown. The popcorn is free and City Center Market Deli foods and sodas will be available for purchase. Everyone is invited to come and go as their schedules permit.

City Center Market defines “local” at three levels. The first level is grown, produced, or processed “within 100 miles” of Cambridge, and this is the one that contributes most to our local economy and growers. The second level is “within Minnesota,” and the third is the “5-state region” or grown, produced or processed in Minnesota or any of the four states that touches Minnesota borders (Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota and North Dakota). All of these levels keep our dollars in our communities and support the farmers, growers and producers in the states that most of us know and often visit.

“This is an exciting time of year for co-ops; the bounty and diversity of local foods are at their peak in the Cambridge region,” said Gayle Cupit, General Manager of City Center Market. “Eat Local Days gives us a chance to introduce ‘newbies’ to the local food movement in a fun, engaging way, and also to challenge local food lovers to up their game a bit.”
