A 26-year-old St. Paul man died Sunday afternoon, July 31, after he jumped from the cliffs and failed to surface in the St. Croix River, near Rock Island, according to the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office.
Nicholas Paul Johns, formerly of Lindstrom, was recovered from the river at approximately 6:25 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office received a 9-1-1 call regarding a possible drowning at about 4:09 p.m. The rescue and recovery effort included four local fire departments, the National Parks Service and Minnesota DNR.
The Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office will be determining cause and manner of death, the sheriff’s office said.
