Cambridge Legion works past Coon Rapids

Pulling through late, the Cambridge Legion squad defeated Coon Rapids 4-1 in the opening round of the District 10 baseball tourney hosted in Coon Rapids July 21. The victory sends the Post #290 boys against Eden Prairie in the 9:30 a.m. second round game on Friday, July 22.

Cole Bakke pitched well to get the win against Coon Rapids, including pitching out of jams in three innings.

Cole Bakke was a workhouse for Cambridge, limiting the Cardinals to 1 run over 8 innings while throwing 160 pitches. Bakke gave up 9 hits while striking out 7 which included working out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth.

Reed Burns came in to pitch a scoreless ninth for the save, allowing 1 hit while tossing 1 strikeout.

Coon Rapids broke a 0-0 game with three straight two-out base hits in the top of the sixth. Bakke tied the game in the seventh when he singled, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch.

Matt Ziebarth was the lone Cambridge player to get 2 hits against CR. He singled home Garrett Hedberg for the go-ahead run in the eighth.

Post #290 broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth when Garrett Hedberg doubled. Ryan Miller sacrificed him ahead, and Matt Zibarth smacked a line drive single to score the go-ahead run. Nick  Johnson then walked, and both runners advanced on a groundball by Burns.

Bakke then put the ball in play to short, and both Ziebarth and Johnson scored on a throwing error to increase the lead to 4-1.
A Cambridge win over Eden Prairie would have them next playing at 3 p.m. on Saturday; a loss would send Post #290 to a 9:30 a.m. game Saturday morning. The District 10 tourney is being held at Wintercrest Fields (adjacent to the west side of Hwy. 10 north of Foley Blvd.)
