Jackets reach State in six events

The Bluejacket track & field squads kept their 2011 season alive as four athletes qualified for this weekend’s State meet in six events after the Section 7AA finals were hosted in Grand Rapids.

Seniors Mark Volker and Conner Anderson placed 3rd and 5th in the pole vault; Volker reached State by clearing the standard.

Senior Hannah Mueller opened sections by matching her personal-best with a 1st place 17-11 effort in the long jump on Wednesday. Returning to GR on Saturday, Mueller won the 100 hurdles with a personal-best 15.1 sprint, then she also made it to State in the triple jump by placing 2nd at 35-10.5. Mueller competed in the State long jump and hurdles last year, as well.

Joining her at State are classmates Rocelle Anderson and Mark Volker, along with junior Forrest Kalk. Anderson cleared a personal-best 9-11 to place 2nd in the girls pole vault. Volker placed  3rd in the boys vault, but he qualified with a State-standard 13-11. Kalk cleared a personal-best 6-02 on the high jump to place 2nd, good enough for State.

“I am so happy for the success of our kids who have qualified for the State meet, but that many individuals don’t qualify unless the whole team is a solid unit. I think our whole team can be proud of this,” commented C-I Coach Kent Viesselman.

On June 10 at Hamline University, the boys pole vault and girls long jump begin at 9 a.m., with the 100 hurdle prelims at 10:07 a.m. On June 11, the girls pole vault, triple jump and boys high jump begin at 9 a.m., with the 100 hurdles finals at 9:33 a.m.

The Bluejackets had more close-calls for State at sections. Billy Eifert placed 3rd in the 3200 run, and Kylie Baas was 3rd in the high jump. Conner Anderson marked a personal-best 13-05 for 5th in the boys vault. Matt Seafolk stepped in for an injured Aaron Kordiak on the boys 4×800, teaming with Sam Westerberg, Trevor Galligan and Eifert for a 2nd-place time of 8:13.9. A big highlight for the C-I girls relays was the 4×400 set of Lily Porta, Erica Young, Carlynn Galeazzi and Paige Muehlhauser knocking 4 seconds off their season-best time.

“It was a bittersweet day for me, personally. Our kids performed at an incredibly high level, but it was also the last meet for some of the best kids I have ever worked with in my 20-year career,” noted Coach Viesselman. “You don’t simply replace the heart of a Nick Solberg, Eric Mielke, Kish Daniels or Jason Codner. There aren’t a lot of athletes that have the work ethic of a Nadia Nassif, Matt Andres or Jessicah Rooney… or the determination or dedication of a Billy Eifert, Joe Illg or Sam Westerberg. Our returning tracksters have big shoes to fill with the graduation of Alex Rood, Casey Golla and Miranda Christensen.

“Every one of our seniors has been outstanding. They have been coachable and ‘team’ players, and I think I speak for the whole coaching staff when I say that this entire class of seniors has been a special class to work with on a daily basis.”

Coach Viesselman was voted the “Section 7AA Girls Coach of the Year” – the second time he earned this award in the past eight years. He is also the current president of the MN State Track Coaches Association.
