A conference championship for Bluejackets

The Cambridge-Isanti fastpitch team grasped its first conference championship since 1991 after holding down visiting Monticello 8-1 May 23. The victory in the final regular-season game allowed the Bluejackets to tie Buffalo atop the Mississippi 8 standings at 14-2.

The C-I girls held a 5-0 lead through four innings as pitcher Bailey Bakken was masterful. Even when the Magic got on the board in the top of the sixth, the Bluejackets answered back on a two-out pinch single from Leah Ponting and a 2-RBI double by Amanda Hanson for big insurance runs.

The Jackets, seeded No. 2 for the Section 7AAA tourney, will next play at home May 26 against either Anoka or North Branch.
