Jacket Softball beats Buffalo, Braham baseball sweeps RC
Weekend Sports: Cambridge-Isanti Softball 5, Buffalo 2 (8 inn)
Taylor Bowker, Allie Hanson and Grace Smethers all delivered run-scoring base hits in the top off the eighth to lift the Bluejackets over Buffalo May 13. Bailey Bakken struck out 9 Bison and allowed just one earned run in the victory.
The win moved Cambridge-Isanti (10-1 conference) ahead of Buffalo (11-2) for the lead in the Mississippi 8. The teams play a rematch at CIHS May 17 (4:30 p.m.)
On Saturday, May 14, visiting Duluth Central hung an 8-4 loss on the Bluejackets. Kate Hammero and Jessica Golden shared pitching duties for C-I, with Kendall Sandberg hitting a 3-run triple in the third.
Braham Baseball 13-, 5-, Rush City -4, -1
The Bombers moved close to clinching the Great River Baseball title with a May 13 sweep at Rush City. Corey Ambrose got the win with 7 innings pitched in Game 1 which saw the Bombers break open the game with a 7-run fifth inning.
Kyle Grell struck out 5 Tigers over 6 innings to get the win in Game 2, with Mike Strelow striking out the final three batters in the seventh. Grell, A.J. Fealy, Adam Hendren and Strelow all had run-scoring hits for the Bombers.
St. Michael-Alb. 10, Cambridge-Isanti Baseball 4
The Knights continued their hot late-season surge by rapping out 13 hits in the May 13 home win. The victory moved SMA a half-game ahead of the Bluejackets in the Mississippi 8 standings, with Buffalo still 1 game up on C-I. Clayton Jennissen had 2 doubles for the Bluejackets. Ryan Miller took the loss after giving up 5 hits and 5 runs (2 earned) in 1.6 innings.
