Becker Tennis tops C-I, takes command of M-8

The big May 6 showdown for the Mississippi 8 boys tennis lead went the way of Becker who knocked off Cambridge-Isanti 6-1 at home.

The Bulldogs remained undefeated in the M-8 by sweeping the Singles matches (Dilly over Nick Reiners 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 at No. 1, Toedter over Marshall White 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, Hultgren over Mike White 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 3, and D. Brown over Brandon Simon 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4).

Adding team points in doubles were Becker’s G. Brown & Hohlen over Josiah Sherry & Sam Renier 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, and Nelson & Ewald over Calvin Cicha & Ryan Hoxmeier 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.

The Jackets’ lone win came at No. 2 Doubles where Matt Olson & Nate Henderson prevailed 6-4, 6-2.

“Give credit where it is due– Becker’s strong singles matched up well with our singles, and their variety and mixing of shots kept our guys off balance,” said C-I Coach Thea Lowman. “With no one being lost to graduation, the Bulldogs, ranked No. 10 in Class A, look to be strong again next year.”

C-I 6, Princeton 1

The Jackets set up that match by defeating visiting Princeton May 5.  The doubles pairings swept the action against the Tigers that afternoon. Sherry & Renier prevailed 6-1, 6-2, followed by Olson & Henderson holding on 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, and Cicha & Hoxmeier rolling 6-2, 6-1.

Scoring singles victories for C-I were Marshall White (6-1, 6-3), Mike White (6-2, 6-2) and Simon (6-3, 6-0).

• The Bluejackets defeated host Rogers 6-1 May 10, locking them into 2nd place in the Mississippi 8.
