James John Cunningham

A faithful and loving tiredless warrior for God, James John Cunningham, 54, was tragically struck by a train Friday afternoon during a typical walk through his childhood wilderness.

Born to Uke and Caroline Cunningham, the former NHL Hockey Player is one of nine children who grew up in the Cartigan Junction area of Shoreview. Cunningham, an avid fisherman, was the proud father of two girls, and grandfather to three grandsons and a granddaughter.

He leaves behind his parents Eugene and Caroline Cunningham, his children: Heidi (Drew) Schauer, Amber Cunningham, siblings: Mike (Judy) Cunningham, Karin (Henry) Harder, Mark (Jane) Cunningham, Colleen (Jim) DeCorsey, Brian (Beth) Cunningham, Debra (Al) Bergman, Donny (Krissy) Cunningham, Danny (Daina) Cunningham, grandchildren: Cade and Jace Cleys, Destiny Schauer, Tristan Schauer, and many family members, friends, and a legacy of a sincere selfless man whose humor, smile and larger than life presence was only outshined by his compassion and enormous heart.

Services were held Wednesday, May 4 at St. Odilia Catholic Church in Shoreview, Minn. In lieu of flowers a family memorial for Jim’s daughters and grandchildren is preferred.
