Cambridge-Isanti finished as runners-up to Maple Grove when the annual Purple Hawk Boys Invite was hosted on a cold and windy May 2. Bluejackets Matt Swanson and Ryan Lundeen tied for 4th overall by coming in with 78s.
“We improved from last Friday by 11 strokes to fire a 321 as a team. It is a move in the right direction. We now need to continue to improve and move that score down under 320,” said C-I Coach Mike Hennen. “Matt Swanson continues to play well, shooting his sixth score in the 70’s in a row. Ryan is starting to get his game going. Reggie Martin opened with a 47 on his first nine but came back with a solid 38 on his second nine.”
More Bluejacket scoring were: Matt Mellum 82, Jordan Knutson 83, Jared Knutson 84.
Tri-medalists for the invite were Centennial’s Ben Alley, Andover’s Davis Tollette and A.J. Oster tying at 76.

• The Bluejackets placed 11th out of 17 teams at the Grand Rapids Grand Slam April 29, shortened to one day because of rain all day on Saturday. Swanson’s 78 earned him a spot on the all-tourney team. Filling out the varsity card were: Martin (84), Jordan Knutson (84), Jared Knutson (86), Lundeen (87), and Jonah Poppen (88).
Girls 5th at Pebble Creek
Emily Sunderman paced the Cambridge-Isanti girls with a 98, Leah Schoenecker fired a 106, and Megan Hallstrom shot a season-low 107 while competing at the Mississippi 8 meet at Becker April 28.
The Bluejackets came in with a 420 total, with Alyssa Rapp (109), Anna Sunderman (112) and Megan Koester (119) also shooting on the varsity. Buffalo maintained its presence in the conference standings with an 8-stroke win over runner-up Becker.
“We are placing 5th out of the eight teams in the conference so far this season, and this is an improvement from last year,” noted C-I Coach Kris Vaske. “For us to move up in our standings as a team, we really need to work hard on our short game. If we can improve our putting and chipping from 100 yards and in, then we may see some lower scores.”
