Jacket Baseball beats Hornets to move in 1st

Team hits-leader Nick Johnson smoked a walk-off double to right-center in the bottom of the seventh when Cambridge-Isanti took over the Mississippi 8 lead with a 4-3 win over visiting Big Lake May 3.

Johnson’s two-out double scored Clayton Jennissen from first base as the Bluejackets reversed the teams’ earlier meeting this season. Johnson, Jennissen, Matt Ziebarth and Mike Henderscheid all had 2 hits against the Hornets which included Henderscheid pulling a solo homer in the fourth.

Cole Bakke did the job again on the mound for C-I, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 7 in the complete-game victory. Bakke is among the metro leaders with 6 wins on the mound this season.

It was a great win, we played small-ball well and got clutch hits,” noted C-I Coach Todd Smrekar. “We executed very well in this win.”

Bakke also tossed a two-hitter, posting 7 Ks, in a complete-game win over the host Royals April 28. Johnson and Tom Selz had 2 hits for C-I, with RBIs provided by Ryan Epsen, Garrett Hedberg, Reed Burns and Ziebarth.

Braham Baseball 13, Pine City 0

The Bombers swept the season series with the Dragons by rolling to a 13-0 road win in six innings April 29. Mike Strelow gave up just a first-inning double while striking out 11 in the win.

Strelow also belted a three-run homer after Christian Towery singled and Kyle Grell doubled in the first inning. Corey Ambrose and Grell added run-scoring singles when the Bombers padded their lead in the second inning. Adam Hendren’s double highlighted the team’s six-run sixth inning.

• The Bombers stayed perfect on the season with an 8-3 win over visiting Onamia May 3.
