Jackets hit past SMA Knights for first time

With all eyes watching at the end, C-I senior Mike White outlasted his St. Michael foe in a long battle at No. 3 Singles April 14.

For the first time in six meetings, the Cambridge-Isanti boys tennis squad defeated St. Michael-Albertville with a 5-2 effort April 14. The victory was the Bluejackets’ third in a row to start the 2011 season.

On the challenging windy day at the CIHS courts, Brandon Simon at No. 4 Singles was the first off the court with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Marshall White at No. 2 Singles soon added a 6-1, 6-1 sweep, and Mike White at No. 3 endured the longest match by rallying for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 marathon win. SMA’s Tyler Schstavich outlasted C-I’s Nick Reiners for a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 Singles.

The Knights also took the No. 1 Doubles match 6-1, 6-3. But crucial team points were turned in by the other Bluejacket doubles pairings. Matt Olson and Nate Henderson found the answer in a 0-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 2. Calvin Cicha and Ryan Hoxmeier then scored a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3.

“Matt and Nate started attacking and controlling the net in the second set, switching the momentum of their match,” observed C-I Coach Thea Lowman. “At No. 3 Doubles, both Ryan and Calvin are new to varsity this year. They have been working well together as a team with Ryan’s strong returning skills and Calvin’s aggressive net play. From the start of the match, they controlled the net.”

• Saturday’s Bluejacket Invite with Benson, Becker and Mound-Westonka was postponed due to the snow that morning. No makeup date has yet been established.

The Tuesday, April 19 match at Buffalo was postponed to Thursday, April 21.
