Virgil Oliver Stone, 87 of Austin, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
He was born July 8, 1923 to Alvin Fred and Clara Laraine (Bostrom) Stone in Isanti, Minn. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1941 and moved to Austin to work at Geo. A. Hormel & Co. He entered the US Army Air Corps on Jan. 28, 1946. Stationed in Japan, he was honorably discharged April 3, 1947. He married Viola Doreene Thompson July 1, 1950 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin. Virgil also worked as a part-time farm laborer for many years. Viola died Jan. 20, 1999. A member Holy Cross Lutheran Church where he had served as a trustee, Virgil belonged to P-9 and enjoyed trout fishing, camping and caring for his yard.
Survivors include two sons, James (Rebecca) Stone of Plano, Texas; Jon (Milinda) Stone of Little Canada; two daughters, Ruth Ann (Thomas) Alexander of Canton; Jane (Charles) Mayzlik of Heath, Ohio; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister, Roselyn Erickson of Cambridge; special friend, Orlie Grant of Austin as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Viola D. Stone on Jan. 20, 1999.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church Lutheran Church in Austin, with Rev. Brian Krueger, officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin with military rites by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91. Arrangements with Worlein Funeral Home, Austin.
