Three advance to national competition
Cambridge-Isanti H.S. technical students enjoyed another great showing at the Minnesota Sate SkillsUSA competition with a total of eight medals brought home from the March 25-26 event. Three members– Skye Schuft-Hunt, Tim Saxton and Calvin Waligora– earned trips to nationals by taking the gold in their divisions. Thousands of dollars in scholarships and tools were also earned.
Hunt-Schuft placed 1st in the Carpentry, Saxton won in Welding, and Waligora was tops in Welding Sculpture. Those three will travel to Kansas City in June for the National SkillsUSA gathering.
Scott Holland also won a gold medal in Mechanics Dexterity. Winning Silver medals at the State meet were Jared Putz (Carpentry), Hunt-Schuft (Blueprint Reading), and Holland (Welding). Taking home bronze medals were Putz (Blueprint Reading), Andy White (Precision Machining), and Joe Pramann (Technical Drafting).
Back in February, the CIHS team went against 22 other schools at the Ridgewater Skills competition in Willmar. Medals were brought home in the following divisions: Orthographic Drafting– Pramann 1st, Fallon Hyde 2nd • Carpentry– Hunt-Schuft 1st, Putz 3rd • Oxy-Acetylene Welding– Tyler Matzer 1st, Waligora 2nd • Mig Welding– Nate Brownell 2nd • Tig Welding– Saxton 1st, Ben Boettcher 2nd • ARC Welding– Holland 1st.
