Playing in the Section 7AA girls basketball quarterfinals at UMD on Saturday, No. 1 South seed Braham pulled away in the second half to defeat rival Rush City 65-35. The Bombers swept all three games with the Tigers this season by limiting them to 15 points in the second stanza.
Braham next takes on North No. 2 seed International Falls in the Tuesday, March 8 semifinals (6 p.m.) back at UMD. The Broncos worked past Two Harbors 68-52 in their quarterfinal matchup.
In the other half of the 7AA brackets, North No. 4 Eveleth-Gilbert upset North No. 1 seed Deer River 61-58. The Golden Bears play South No. 2 Esko in the other semifinals; the Eskomos survived a 56-54 overtime game with Mora on Saturday.
Scoring for Braham against Rush City were Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (17 points), Becca Dahlman (14), Liz Anderson (14), Hannah Dahlman (9), Kayla Nickles (6), Austyn Eng (3) and Katie Nickles (2). Braham went 20-for-25 at the free throw line, including opening up a 34-20 halftime game with eight straight free throws to start the second half. The Bombers forced a whopping 32 Tiger turnovers.
