South top-seed Braham defeated No. 8 Hinckley-Finlayson 111-26 in the March 2 opening round of the Section 7AA girls basketball playoffs. The win sends the Bombers to Saturday’s 7AA quarterfinals, taking on Rush City at 2:45 p.m. on the University of Minnesota-Duluth court.
The Bombers have defeated the RC Tigers twice this season, the last game turning into a 77-28 blowout when Braham clinched their second straight Great River title on Feb. 8. The No. 4 seed Tigers opened the tourney with a 56-16 win over No. 5 Aitkin.
The winner of the Braham/RC game will play the winner of the Two Harbors/International Falls quarterfinals. The semifinals will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 back at UMD.
In the other half of the brackets, Mora (62-37 over Pine City) and Esko (70-38 over Moose Lake) advanced to play each other in the quarters. Also North top-seed Deer River opened with a 61-26 win over Duluth Marshall.
