Jacket hockey falls to Duluth East

Greyhounds take 7AA playoff opener 11-0

Duluth East began the defense of its Section 7AA boys hockey title with an 11-0 home victory over Cambridge-Isanti Feb. 22. The loss ends the Bluejackets’ season with an 11-12-3 overall record.

Jake Randolph and Trevor Olson scored 20 seconds apart for a 2-0 Greyhound lead five minutes into the game. Olson went on to notch the hat trick, as did teammate Dom Taninato. East held a 4-0 edge after one period and upped it to 7-0 after the second stanza. The No. 1 seeds outshot C-I 43-9.

East will host No. 4 Elk River in Saturday’s semifinals; the Elks shut out Forest Lake 2-0 in their quarterfinal matchup. Reaching the semis in the other half of the brackets are No. 2 Grand Rapids (7-2 over St. Francis) and No. 3 Cloquet (2-1 over Andover).

The Section 7AA championship will be March 3 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.

• The Elk River girls defeated Grand Rapids 4-1 in the Feb. 16 Section 7AA title match. The Elks take on top-seed Minnetonka in this week’s Class AA hockey tourney. North Wright County of the Mississippi 8 Conference also reached State out of Section 8AA; the Riverhawks play No. 4 seed Coon Rapids in the quarters.
