St. Michael-Albertville stays on State tear

Knights work past Cambridge-Isanti 34-16 in Section 7AAA Team championship

St. Michael-Albertville earned its 13th straight team trip to State after holding off Cambridge-Isanti 34-16 in the Section 7AAA Team championship, hosted Feb. 18 at Blaine. The Knights won 9-of-14 matches in defense of the section title.

Adam Kelling came through with 5 takedowns and a reverse in his 15-5 major over SMA’s Marcus in the 7AAA Team finals.

SMA opened with a 13-0 lead after three matches before C-I’s Landon Chumley got in a big throw for a 7-4 decision at 125. The Knights won the next two to increase their lead to 19-3, then Travis Holt (10-4), Adam Kelling (15-5 major) began a Jacket rally. Mark Volker’s 8-3 decision at 160 had C-I within 22-13, but the Knights countered with a major at 171 and a 4OT win by Shaun Little at 189 to seal the win. Derek Swanson added a 6-3 decision at 215 for C-I.

The Jackets opened the section tourney Friday night with a 47-21 win over St. Francis. That was followed by a 53-18 landslide victory over Coon Rapids in the semifinals. In that match, the Bluejackets reeled off 11 straight wins including pins by Tanner Torgerson (119), Chumley (125), Travis Holt (140), Kelling (152), Volker (160), and Swanson (189).

Next up for the Bluejackets will be hosting the Section 7AAA Individual Championships at CIHS Feb. 25-26.
