Floyd W. ‘Baldy’ Nelson, coach, educator, civic leader, veteran,
innovator, and long-time resident of Worthington, Minn., passed away
peacefully at Ecumen Lakeview Commons in Maplewood, Minn. on Monday,
February 7, 2011 at the age of 93.
Baldy was a star athlete in the Cambridge Public School system and continued his success as an athlete at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. He served in the US Navy during WWII. After college, he excelled as a coach, teacher and civic leader in Worthington. As Baldy recently reflected, “I’ve had a wonderful life.”
He was a fun, warm and giving individual and a friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his mother Ida, father Walter, sisters Muriel and Eleanor and brothers Harold, LeRoy and Richard.
Baldy is survived by his wife of 67 years, Agnes Louise, children Marsha Serene, Stephan Peter (Kathryn Lamp), Jan Louise (Jack Rademacher), and Roger Phillip (Teresa Armstrong), grandchildren Rachel McPhee-Benson (Rob Benson), Michael Nelson, Jeff Nelson, Robb Nelson and Katherine Nelson, and sisters Doris (Mickelson), Beatrice (Adkins), and Ardelle (Hester).
A memorial Service was held Sunday, Feb. 13. Another memorial service will be held at a later date at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, Minn.
