Monticello defeats C-I to tighten grips on conference title

Cambridge-Isanti showed a balanced effort while placing as runners-up to Elk River at Saturday’s Bluejacket Invite.

The Elks totaled 539.5 points to the Jackets’ 461. Also competing were section-partners Duluth (391) and Forest Lake (313), along with Champlin Park (260), Faribault (238.5) and Princeton (94).

Jake Berry beat his seed time to win both the 100 Butterfly (54.8) and 100 Backstroke (54.7). Jason Codner added big points with 3rd places in the 50 Free (23.3) and 100 Free (51.4) races.

More top 8 placings for C-I at its invitational were:
• David Voller– 4th in 200 Free, 5th in 500 Free;
• Calvin Cicha– 4th in 200 IM, 4th in 100 Breaststroke;
• Zach Stewart 5th, Billy Eifert 6th, Parker Brown 9th in Diving;
• Benj Nault-Maurer– 5th in 100 Backstroke;
• Nick Solberg– 6th in 100 Breaststroke.

The top C-I relays all placed 2nd, including the 400 Free Relay of Codner, Voller, Nault-Maurer and Berry which dropped two seconds off its seed time.

The Magic clinched their third straight Mississippi 8 title by holding down the visiting Bluejackets Jan. 27. Monticello swept the top two spots in five events (50 Free, Diving, 100 Free, 500 Free and 100 Breaststroke) en route to victory.

Berry won both the 200 IM and 100 Backstroke for Cambridge-Isanti. Also placing 1st was the 200 Medley Relay of Berry, Solberg, Acre-Kendall and Kyle McCormick. Placing 2nd were Voller (200 Free), Cicha (200 IM), and Acre-Kendall (100 Butterfly).
