East Central Energy (ECE) is accepting applications from students who would like to be considered for the Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., June 11-16, 2011.

The all-expense-paid tour helps students understand American government and its role in the history of rural electric cooperatives. Students visit the Capitol and meet with their elected officials, tour the national monuments and museums and get to know other teens from around the country.

The Youth Tour is a whirlwind week of touring, talking, learning and laughter, and two local high school juniors and seniors will experience it all as guests of ECE.

Juniors and seniors whose parents or guardians are ECE members may apply. The application process includes writing an essay on the topic, “How are electric cooperatives different from other electric utilities?” The essays will be judged and finalists chosen. The finalists will be interviewed in Braham, and the top two students will each receive the June 2011 trip to Washington, D.C.

To request an application packet, call 1-800-254-7944, ext. 2022, or e-mail cindy.rolain@ecemn.com. Application materials must be completed and returned to ECE by Wednesday, March 9. To view a video on the Youth Tour, visit www.eastcentralenergy.com and click on Community.

For more than 40 years, electric cooperatives have sponsored the Rural Electric Youth Tour, giving high school students an opportunity to experience firsthand the essence of democracy.
