Five Jacket Wreslters place at Rumble

Big weekend upcoming at CIHS, including Alumni Day at annual Bluejacket Invite

At the 56-team Rumble on the Red invitational hosted at the Fargo Dome Dec. 29-30, Cambridge-Isanti placed 6th with a strong Day 2 showing.  Five Bluejacket wrestlers fought for top-8 placings in the stacked field.

Sophomore Ty Torgerson (left) rallied after dropping his opening match at 135, working all the way through the consolation brackets to pace C-I with a 3rd-place medal. Torgerson went 8-1 altogether, pinning five opponents. His final match was a 7-4 decision over Abrahamson of Thief River Falls.

Senior Derek Swanson and junior Clayton Jennissen both placed 4th after sweeping their Day 1 matches. Swanson, wrestling at 189, went 4-2 in the tourney with 1 fall. He dropped a 4-0 decision to Matthees of Zumbrota-Mazzepa in the 3rd-place match. Jennissen at 171 went 5-2 with 2 falls in the invite, losing by fall in the 3rd-place match to Lehmann of West Fargo.

Cody Skog at 145 placed 6th, and Travis Holt at 140 placed 8th for the Bluejackets. Skog was 6-3 with 4 falls, dropping his final match 1-0 to Holt of Albany. Holt went 5-3 with 4 falls, dropping a 4-3 decision to St. Cloud Apollo’s Nguyen in the 7th-place match.

Mark Volker at 160 went 4-2 for C-I at the Rumble. Landon Chumley at 125 and Adam Kelling at 152 both won two matches.

The Bluejackets scored 140.5 points to place behind winner Scott West (201.5), Jackson County Central (182.5), Foley (180.5), Hastings (161.5) and Minneota (141.5). Section 7AAA partner Forest Lake was just behind in 7th (137 points). More 7AAA teams competing were Coon Rapids (20th), Elk River (22nd) and Anoka (26th).

Big weekend at CIHS gym
The Bluejackets will host a monster weekend of wrestling Jan. 7 and 8, starting with the annual rivalry match with St. Francis Friday night. Hometown Heroes (military veterans, law enforcement, firefighters etc.) will be honored prior to the varsity match.

On Saturday is the annual Bluejacket Invite, with C-I wrestling alumni recognized just prior to the finals at 4 p.m. with a Social at Sidelines after the meet. The Jackets, ranked 7th in Class AAA, are the five-time defending invite champs. Among the visiting teams are Prior Lake (10th in AAA), Elk River (11th in AAA), Grand Rapids (10th in AA) and Little Falls (11th in AA).
