Shalom Furniture donates to Habitat fund

Posted Online: 11/20/02

Shalom Furniture made a final donation of $19,510 to East Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity Nov. 5.

Shalom Furniture opened in November 1994 in a rented space at the Cambridge RTC. It was a faith-based volunteer organization whose mission was to receive furniture that had been donated, make it available to all people at affordable prices and then forward the proceeds to ECM Habitat for Humanity.

As a non-profit organization, it was staffed by five local churches and other individuals from the community and was open four hours a week. The churches directly involved were Cambridge Lutheran, Christ the King, First Baptist, Joy Lutheran, and Cambridge UMC.

It was forced to close in June 2001, when its lease for space was terminated. The Shalom Furniture Board attempted to find another location to continue its ministry to those in need of the service, but there was no affordable space available.

During its six and one-half years of operation, $80,000 was given to East Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity.

The endeavors of Shalom Furniture, ECM Habitat, area churches, and many organizations and individuals formed a positive partnership to help alleviate homelessness and provide affordable housing.

This last gift was miraculously timely, providing much needed funds, and will allow the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate to finish its 11th home for a family in need just before Christmas.

Shalom Furniture wishes to thank everyone who has been a part of its operation: the volunteers, valued customers, those who donated furniture, and the many wonderful and faithful members of the community who continue to be committed to the Habitat for Humanity program.
