Warriors place 1st in final tourneyPosted Online: 11/12/02 The Cambridge Christian School co-ed soccer team and five other teams traveled to Valley Christian School in Wisconsin Oct. 26 for their final action of Fall 2002. The championship competition was between CCS and Faith Christian of Foreston. These teams competed twice this seasonñone was a close 1-0 loss for the Warriors and the other a victory in an overtime shootout. In Wisconsin, the Warriors' offense showed incredible passing and drive. Derrick Grams punched in three unassisted goals in the first half as CCS took a 3-0 lead. The Cambridge defensive line of Erika Westerlund, Paul Muehlhauser, Halet Tesfaye and stopper Dexter Vosika could not be penetrated to help maintain the shutout. In the second half, the Warriors changed goalies and moved Austin Tofte to forward. Tofte scored minutes after the move on an unassisted play. The Warrior' defense consistently shut down Faith as they attempted to push the ball toward the net. The well-executed game-plan brought the game to a final 4-0 finish. This was the first time the Warriors took 1st place in the annual tournament in six years. The squad finished the season with a record of 15-2-1. In their previous action just before the tournament, the Warriors defeated P.A.C.T. 6-4 and St. Francis 3-2. Against P.A.C.T., Tofte sent a 70-yard kick from the CCS goal which ended up assisting Grams on the game's first goal. Bernie Palmer assisted on Grams' second goal, and Tofte, coming out of the net, added the Warriors' third goal of the first half. Grams and Tofte added unassisted goals in the second half to keep the hosts at bay. The Warriors hosted their final home game on Oct. 18 against St. Francis, and Tofte put the team on the board off a pass from Sam Wold. The CCS defense was tight, and 7th grade goalie Vosika had some great goalie saves. A Wold goal assisted by Brian Sobas and another unassisted Grams' goal increased the lead to 3-0. ©Isanti County News |
